Icy conditions on streets and sidewalks as snow cleanup continues across the Philadelphia region

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Icy conditions on side streets and sidewalks are a concern across the Delaware Valley as arctic air settles in following Sunday's snow.

Main roads are mostly clear, but the focus has shifted to side streets, sidewalks, and driveways that are covered with a thin layer of ice in some areas.

Schools across Philadelphia, as well as courts and government offices, opened on a two-hour delay as cleanup continues.

The icy mess caused spinouts on Presidential Boulevard in Wynnefield Heights during the morning commute. The driving conditions were also dangerous on the hills in Manayunk and Roxborough.

"Last night we watched like 10 plus people get stuck. The roads aren't salted. I can't believe schools didn't call off entirely today," said Madeleine Bair of Roxborough.

"People are driving down the street, and it's so bad coming up that people are turned around and drive the wrong way down the one-way street," added Sandy Hartwig of Roxborough.

Action News reached out to the Streets Department to find out its plan to clear the icy hazard.

In a statement, the spokesperson says the city is "spreading salt to help melt and break up the ice." They added that the winter weather operation that began on Saturday night involved 200 city vehicles and 450 city staff.

Residents are asked to report unsafe road conditions to 311 so crews can respond and treat problem areas.

People got creative on Sunday, using the good old-fashioned broom to push the snow off the top of their cars.

The good thing is that the snow fell early enough to get a head start on cleanup.

Families in Montgomery and Chester counties had snowblowers out to clear sidewalks as much as possible.

Many others broke out the shovels and got to work.

"Coming up a hill, especially when it's slippery," said Lisa Walski of Norristown, Pennsylvania. "Take it slow, even driving because the roads, you think they're alright, but there's ice still on them."
