PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- It has been an extremely violent night across the area with five separate shootings.

In one case, Philadelphia residents fought back.

Two people were shot during an attempted break-in and a separate home invasion.

In the latest incident, a man was killed on the 1600 block of Griffith Street in Philadelphia's Rhawnhurst neighborhood.

Police say a man, who is believed to be in his 40s, broke into a family home on Griffith Street around 1:30 a.m. on Monday.

Police say the man allegedly went into the daughter's room, when the person living on the first floor heard the commotion and got his gun.

He then allegedly saw the intruder holding a stick, according to police.

Police say the resident told the intruder to drop the stick, but the intruder refused. That's when the resident allegedly shot the man once in the chest.

The intruder was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigators say the front door was forced open, and a suspicious car was parked outside.

In a separate overnight shooting, Philadelphia police say a 33-year-old man was shot while trying to break into his ex's home in Parkside.

Police received a call around midnight on Monday about a man at a Sunoco at 38th and Girard streets, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

He was rushed to the hospital by officers.

A few minutes later, another call came in from a woman who lives on Cambridge Street, near the Sunoco, who said she shot a man who was trying to come in through her window.

"The male was trying to enter her property through the front window, and that the male was a former domestic partner of hers. Female said she didn't know who it was and she fired shots," Captain Louise Higginson, with the Philadelphia Police Department, said.

Both shootings remain under investigation.
