Large crowd marches through Center City for May Day rally

PHILAELPHIA (WPVI) -- A massive march rolled through Center City Philadelphia on Friday evening as thousands of workers and advocates took to the streets for a May Day rally.

Demonstrators representing labor unions and immigrant justice groups gathered outside City Hall, promoting what they described as a working people's
vision for the city.

The crowd, rallying against what organizers called a culture of greed, marched through the streets to make their message heard.

Action News was at the start of the march, where a banner leading the crowd summed up their theme: "Workers over billionaires."

Chopper 6 showed a sea of people representing roughly 30 labor unions and other organizations, including teachers, hotel and airport workers, and construction crews.

The rally began with speakers on the north apron of City Hall calling for higher wages, stronger labor protections and immigration reform. The event is part of a nationwide movement tied to International Workers' Day.

Organizers said the large turnout reflects growing frustration over economic inequality and concerns about worker protections.

The march is set to continue to 17th Street and JFK Boulevard, where demonstrators plan to hold another rally. Along the route, organizers say participants will stop outside several companies to bring their message directly to business leaders.
