Local leaders fight Philadelphia school closures ahead of final vote

Updated 3 hours ago
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia school board members are scheduled to make a final vote Thursday on proposed closures, building upgrades and mergers in the $3 billion facilities master plan.

The vote comes after the school board delayed their decision last week in hopes of giving the public more time to understand the plan.

More than a dozen city and state leaders plan to fight the proposal to the very end, despite revisions to the plan last week.

As it stands, 17 schools would close, 169 would be modernized and six others would be merged.

Schools Superintendent Dr. Tony Watlington and district leaders said their facilities budget addresses underfunding, building conditions and enrollment changes.

Philadelphia councilmember-at-large, Isaiah Thomas, announced a press conference Thursday morning in West Philadelphia at Paul Robeson, one of the schools set to be closed.

Thomas will be joined by more than a dozen city leaders, state representatives and education advocates to fight against the closures of Paul Robeson High School, Lankenau Environmental Science High School and Overbrook Elementary School.

School district leaders held town halls since the plan was initially announced in January and listened to hours of feedback on their solution to overcome the $300 million structural deficit Philadelphia public schools are facing.

Students, teachers and parents within the impacted communities have been showing up big, protesting and expressing frustration while trying to understand the reasoning behind the proposed cuts.

City council members wanted the vote to be delayed until the end of May.

The board is scheduled to meet for the vote Thursday, starting at 4 p.m.

If the plan is approved, it will go into effect for the 2027-2028 school year.

According to councilmember Thomas' office, the other members set to attend the press conference include Jamie Gauthier, Kendra Brooks, Curtis Jones, Nina Ahmad, Quetcy Lozada, Jim Harrity, Nicholas O'Rourke, and Rue Landau.

The state representatives include Morgan Cephas and Rick Krajewski.

Thomas' office also says other elected officials and education leaders.
