Made in PA: How Stateside grew into a nationally-recognized brand

PITTSTON, Pa. (WPVI) -- Stateside Brands, a Pennsylvania-based beverage company, has grown from a local startup into a nationally recognized brand, with its canned cocktails and vodka sodas now stocked on shelves across the country.

The company's products are canned at the Lion Brewery in Pittston, Pennsylvania, near Scranton, where hundreds of cans move through the production line each minute.

"In total, we're running 1,800 cans a minute here, and on the new line we just installed it will be 2,200 cans," a plant official said during a tour of the facility.

Clement Pappas, co-founder and CEO of Stateside Brands, said demand for Surfside exceeded expectations from the start.

"When we came out with Surfside, it was just from day one, we could not make that product fast enough, and it was like, 'Wow, we really hit the lottery here,'" Pappas said.

Stateside Brands is the maker of Surfside Iced Tea & Vodka, Vodka Lemonades, Stateside Vodka Sodas and Stateside Vodka.

Pappas joined Matt and Bryan Quigley more than a decade ago after being introduced to their vodka business.

"The vodka bottle that Matt had designed was really magnetic and attractive. And I thought that looks like something I could buy," Pappas said.

He added that he "read the business plan and liked it, and we were off to the races."

The company did not enter the canned cocktail market until the COVID-19 pandemic. Pappas said the category's growth accelerated in 2022.

"(It) was really 2022 when that started taking off, and we kind of caught our breath at the end of the summer and said, 'We got to take this thing national,'" he said.

Among the company's offerings, Surfside Half & Half is its most popular flavor.

"So what is casually known as the Arnold Palmer, right? Half lemonade, half tea," Pappas said. "But top sellers would be, you know, the original tea, the original lemonade, strawberry lemonade."

Stateside Brands employs more than 300 people, with more than half of its workforce based in Pennsylvania.

"When you think about the people that are working in the factory, and then all the associated activity with trucking back and forth and bartenders," Pappas said. "We're really proud of it. And we love Philly," he added.

Reflecting on the company's growth and brand recognition, Pappas said the experience still feels surreal.

"Every day, it feels very surreal to me. I was just at the Home Run Derby, and, the beer hawkers that carry the cases and go up and down the aisles and they're going 'Cold beer' and 'Cold Surfside,' you know, and it's like, I never thought in my wildest dreams that that's what I'd hear at a Phillies game," he said.
