Shaun Murphy, 47, of Millville, died Thursday after officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a home on Hazel Boulevard.
According to the New Jersey Attorney General's Office, Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office Sgt. John Borelli fatally shot Murphy during an encounter inside the home.
Neighbors said officers arrived around 8 a.m. and described the situation as a standoff that lasted for several hours.

Photos shared by a neighbor showed officers positioned behind the house earlier in the day. A woman who asked not to be identified said she heard police communicating with a man inside through a loudspeaker.
"Just asking if they could come outside, show yourself, we just want to make sure you're OK, you're not in trouble -- those kinds of things," she said.
The neighbor said the atmosphere changed around 1 p.m.
"EMS department came very quickly after and then all the police officers came back outside," she said. "I don't want to say it calmed down, but the energy kind of shifted. I knew whatever happened, it was all done."
Investigators have not said what led to the gunfire.
Authorities said a handgun was recovered at the scene.
The Attorney General's Office said the investigation remains ongoing and that no additional details are being released at this time.
