Marvin Clifford, 30, of North Charleston, was taken into custody on multiple felony charges on Monday, according to police.
It happened in the parking lot of the Budget Inn on Memorial Drive, just before 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.
When troopers arrived, they found 49-year-old John Pipkin, of Wilmington, in the parking lot with an apparent gunshot wound.
Pipkin was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Clifford has been charged with felony first-degree murder as well as attempted robbery, among other charges. He is being held on a $1,110,000 cash bond.
