Tony Award-winner J. Harrison Ghee has been tapped to play the role of Mary Todd Lincoln when the show comes to town in March of 2027.
"I'm putting on my Mary cape, and I'm ready to show the world the superpowers," says Ghee.
The show is breaking records on Broadway, and for Ghee, this is more than a moment.
"It is a moment of liberation," says Ghee. "It's a moment of foolishness, of freedom, and fabulosity."
Ghee made history at the 2023 Tony Awards by becoming one of the first openly non-binary actors to win an award, taking home the trophy for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for their role as Daphne in the Broadway stage adaptation of "Some Like It Hot."
Ghee will start out playing Mary's husband on tour, and then assume the title role of Mary.
Cole Escola's one-act play is described as a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln's assassination.
Ghee can only describe it as "craziness."
"It's a ride of exhilaration. It's a moment to really step out of our reality into a world of silliness, of stupidity, and just have a good time," says Ghee.
"Oh, Mary!" comes to the Miller Theater March 9-14, 2027.
