Mayor John Carney issues state of emergency for Wilmington, Del. before winter storm

WILMINGTON, Del. (WPVI) -- A state of emergency is now in effect for Wilmington, Delaware, ahead of a major winter storm set to hit the region on Sunday.

Mayor John Carney said Friday the state of emergency will remain in effect until further notice.

The mayor urges Wilmington residents to stay indoors and refrain from unnecessary travel.

The City's Department of Public Works Street Cleaning Division is responsible for plowing and salting the streets.

City offices will be closed Monday. Sanitation pickups will not occur as scheduled on Monday and Tuesday. They will resume Wednesday.



Red Cross will provide shelter for residents at the Wilmington PAL at 3707 North Market Street.

In addition, shelter for the unhoused will be located at 719 North Shipley Street and also at the William Hicks Anderson Community Center at 501 North Madison Street.

Additional shelters will be determined as needed.

The mayor urges residents to prepare by gathering non-perishable foods, medications, first aid kits, portable chargers, and warm clothing.

Check in with neighbors and the elderly.



Plumbing and water emergencies can be reported through the City's Water Utility website.

The city encourages residents to download the "Ready Wilmington" app to receive updated information from Wilmington's Office of Emergency Management.
