Mickey Morandini named Phillies first base coach

Former Phillie Mickey Morandini has been named the team's first base coach, Manager Pete Mackanin announced Monday.

Morandini has been a member of the Phillies player development staff for the past five seasons, spending three years as a manager and the last two as a coach.

He managed single-A Williamsport (2011) and single-A Lakewood (2012-13) before serving as a coach for both triple-A Lehigh Valley (2014-15) and double-A Reading (2015).

Morandini, 49, played 11 seasons in the major leagues. He played for the Phillies between 1990-97, including for the 1993 National League Champions, and again in 2000.



He was an All-Star second baseman in 1995.



Morandini also played for the Chicago Cubs (1998-99) and Toronto Blue Jays (2000).

He finished with a .268 batting average, 209 doubles, 54 triples and 123 stolen bases.

Morandini joins the Phillies coaching staff which includes Larry Bowa (bench/infield), Steve Henderson (hitting), Rick Kranitz (bullpen), Bob McClure (pitching), John McLaren (catching), Juan Samuel (third base/outfield).

Assistant coach Jorge Velandia will return to his role as special assistant, player personnel.
