TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- A year-long investigation led to charges against 13 people for their alleged roles in a human trafficking ring in New Jersey.

A year-long investigation led to charges against 13 people for their alleged roles in a human trafficking ring in New Jersey.

Authorities say the ring spanned multiple counties, including Camden, Burlington, Middlesex and Ocean counties.

On Friday, law enforcement publicly identified the two suspects at the center of their investigation as Nathaniel Clay, of Mount Laurel, and Shalaby Hicks, of Pennsauken.

The alleged leaders of a human trafficking operation in New Jersey are Shalaby Hicks, of Pennsauken, and Nathaniel Clay, of Mount Laurel, according to officials.

They say, so far, 15 women, between the ages of 29 and 52, have come forward as victims of this alleged scheme.

"Hicks and Clay led this human trafficking operation in which women engaged in sexual acts in exchange for money. Money they then handed over to Hicks and Clay," said NJ Attorney General Jennifer Davenport.

Authorities also say the leaders also distributed dangerous narcotics, including methamphetamine, fentanyl and crack cocaine.

On May 7, search warrants were executed at several homes, cars and three motels along Route 73.

Those motels are the Riviera Motor Inn in Pennsauken, and the Bel-Air Motor Lodge and Hometown Studios in Maple Shade.

Officials say as the FIFA World Cup games draw closer, they'll be expanding their efforts to crack down on human trafficking.

"When there's visitors and spectators, people coming together for sporting events or other activities, you will also see that people try to profit off of that activity with any type of criminal activity," Davenport said. "Here, with human trafficking, you have many people coming from around the globe, which adds to that."

Hicks and Clay are now in jail, facing life in prison if convicted.

Authorities are looking for other potential victims to come forward. New Jersey has a human trafficking hotline that can be reached at 855-363-6548.
