Man charged after motorcyclist dies following crash on Route 40 in Bear, Delaware

BEAR, Del. (WPVI) -- A man has been arrested in connection with a deadly crash on Route 40 in Bear, Delaware.

The crash happened around 10 a.m. on Sunday.



Investigators say a Chevrolet Malibu was traveling in the eastbound lanes of Route 40, near Fir Avenue, when the driver crossed into the westbound lanes after failing to stop at a stop sign, then drove diagonally in the wrong direction across the westbound lanes of US Route 40.

That's when the driver collided with a Suzuki motorcycle, which was traveling westbound.

The motorcyclists were thrown from the bike.

The passenger of the motorcycle has only been identified as a 44-year-old woman from New Castle, Delaware. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her name is being withheld until her family is notified.



The driver of the motorcycle, identified as a 36-year-old man from Bear, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car, identified as Mendoza, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

After being released from the hospital, Mendoza was arrested and charged. He is being held on $10,000 cash bond.

The road was closed for roughly 3.5 hours while the scene was investigated and has since been reopened.
