Last week, Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that a software glitch at the Motor Vehicle Commission improperly registered 6,600 non-citizens to vote in 2023.
Fewer than 400 actually voted.
On Tuesday, the governor said more than 4,500 people who were mistakenly registered through that method have been removed.
The remaining registrations were referred to county elections officials.
The announcement comes on the same day that the governor and lieutenant governor celebrated the recently passed "John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act".
That legislation enacts comprehensive voting rights protections in the state of New Jersey.
