New product claims to be emergency fuel for stranded drivers

Magic Tank, which can be bought online, is $19.95 per half gallon bottle.

Its makers call it emergency fuel that's safe to keep in your car. They say it will protect your family from being stranded.

"If you're running out of gas or have run out of gas - just pop a bottle out, pour it in, and it gets you to the next gas station," said Steve Bistritzy, Magic Tank.

Sound easy enough.

We took our Action News vehicle to Pennco Tech in South Jersey to have almost all the fuel taken out of our tank.

Then we ended up driving it around a bit so we ran out completely.

Now the makers of Magic Tank claim it won't harm your engine, sensors, or converter and it's safe to keep in your car.

"Magic Tank is a nonflammable fuel. Essentially what we've done is taken petroleum and taken out all the highly flammable components," said Bistritzy.

We tested the non-flammability claims and neither the vapor nor the liquid ignited.

Despite our test - at least one expert at Pennco Tech says he'd still be wary of keeping Magic Tank in his vehicle.

But the company stands by its safety claims, saying Magic Tank is combustible but safe to keep in your vehicle for as long as 10-years.

Does Magic Tank live up to its claims to get us going again?

After we poured in the first half-gallon bottle, our car wouldn't start.

But we were told for bigger cars, it might take two bottles. After bottle number two, we were up and running.

Now the question is - how far could we go?

Action News drove, and drove, and drove -

In the end, we got 10 miles and decided that was far enough. We pulled into a gas station and filled her up.

If you're considering getting Magic Tank to keep in your vehicle, there's also a long list of other things safety experts say you absolutely must keep in your car in case of an emergency.

They include a small first-aid kit, two roadside flares, a quart of oil, extra fuses, a flashlight, a couple multi-purpose tools including pliers and a screwdriver, a tire inflator, some rags, a pocket knife, and a help sign.
