Mullock, a golf professional as well as mayor of the shore resort town, defeated a handful of other Democrats in the southern New Jersey district that includes Atlantic City and the Pine Barrens. An advocate of Medicare for all, a slogan that champions universal health care, Mullock supported his candidacy with a $110,000 loan, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Democratic hopes at retaking the closely divided House could hinge on districts like this one which have recently swung toward President Donald Trump in recent elections. In 2018, the district elected Van Drew as a Democrat. He later left the party for the GOP, citing concerns about Trump's first impeachment.
Despite his loan to the campaign, Mullock faces a cash disadvantage.
Van Drew, a dentist and former state legislator, heads into the general election with nearly $1.4 million on hand compared with Mullock's roughly $250,000.
