Investigators say a 48-year-old driver with Holcomb Bus Services was transporting 28 kindergarten through fifth-grade students from Broad Street Elementary School on the day of the crash.

The report says the bus stopped south of the intersection of Bennett Street and Ashton Drive to unload students. Smith and a 10-year-old girl walked north along the sidewalk to the corner of Bennett Street and Ashton Drive, where they stopped before proceeding across the street.

"As the two students began to cross Ashton Drive, the bus moved forward from its stopped position and made a right turn onto Ashton Drive," the NTSB said. "During the turn, the bus struck the 7-year-old male student, who sustained fatal injuries."

No other injuries were reported in the incident.

A spokesperson for Holcomb Bus Services said the driver has been with the company since 2024. She was described by the company as having no prior issues.

The company said it was also launching an internal review of the incident.
