Advocacy group aims to preserve the history of slavery at Philadelphia's President's House memorial

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A Philadelphia advocacy group will gather at Independence Mall to preserve the history of slavery at the President's House memorial in Old City.

The Avenging the Ancestors Coalition will hold its 24th annual Slavery Commiseration at 6th and Market streets at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

The event comes amid a fight over the Trump administration's removal and replacement of panels detailing the lives of the nine people enslaved by George Washington.

Critics say the new exhibit downplays slavery and Washington's role as an enslaver.



Historians, attorneys, clergy and community leaders are due to speak.
