Philadelphia Asian American Film Foundation: Call for support and celebration

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Film lovers, listen up! PAAFF, the Philadelphia Asian American Film Foundation, will host a critical benefit and its second annual spring showcase next week.

The showcase will be a full day of film screenings and discussions with Asian American filmmakers.

"The spring showcase is Saturday, May 30, and we're going to be in two different locations," said PAAFF Executive Director Nani Shin. "We're going to start out with the Shorts Showcase. It's kind of a sci-fi, kind of fantastical program."

That will happen at Studio Symphony.

Then, a powerful documentary-style film called American Doctor will be screened at the Penn Museum. It follows three doctors - Palestinian, Jewish, and Zoroastrian - serving in Gaza.

Shin says PAAFF's mission is very simple.

"To create space for these stories that sometimes are difficult, sometimes they're challenging, and some are just fun and entertaining," she said. "But we want to make sure that we bring the community together to be able to show it and to be able to talk about it."

The last film is a lighthearted, fun one called No Room for Love about the lives of a Filipino American family and friends crammed into a small apartment.

But as PAAFF prepares for its celebratory spring showcase, its leaders are also making a plea for support from the community.

Shin says it is critical that people step up to help the organization.

"All the federal funding has been dried up, which trickles down to some of the regional funding," she said. "We've lost some corporate sponsors, and also the grants have become much more competitive."

PAAFF provides a platform for current films. It also works to create a pipeline for the next generation of storytellers.

But it is in a dire situation, even having to furlough staff for a few months.

The benefit is happening next Tuesday, before the spring showcase. Shin says it will be a fun night with an auction and light bites.

Plus, the stars of Hulu's hit show, Deli Boys, will be there in person to accept the Icon Storyteller award.
