New legislation gives Philadelphia renters more protections

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Philadelphia City Council has passed the final bills in the so-called "Safe Healthy Homes Act."

The legislation strengthens protections for renters.

This was the final step of what was a rocky road for the measure.

A group of landlords filed a lawsuit against the legislation, saying it does not hold bad actors accountable.

That lawsuit was settled, and the council gave the bills final approval on Thursday.

The Safe Healthy Homes Act requires a city-run rental inspection program. It also forces landlords to provide written notices to renters regarding lease terminations.
