No harmful toxic compounds found in air after Grays Ferry fire: Philadelphia Department of Health

Friday, February 13, 2026
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Philadelphia Department of Public Health says residents in Grays Ferry can return to their normal routines following concerns about toxins in the air.

It was all due to a fire that broke out Thursday night at a recycling plant facility at South 34th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue.

Residents were initially asked to avoid the area or stay inside if possible due to smoke from the fire.

However, on Friday afternoon, the health department gave the all-clear, saying air quality tests show that "no toxic compounds were identified in quantities that would threaten human health."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
