PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A Philadelphia police officer was hospitalized on Tuesday night after being hit by a driver in a stolen vehicle.

It happened around 9:45 p.m. at Front Street and Hunting Park Avenue in the city's Feltonville section.

According to Chief Inspector Scott Small, two police officers were on patrol when they spotted a white Honda that came back as stolen on Sunday in an armed carjacking.

Small says officers followed the vehicle, which became stuck in traffic near the intersection of Front Street and Hunting Park Avenue. At some point, one of the officers got out to approach the stolen car, and that's when police say the suspect reversed.

"The driver put the stolen car in reverse and then struck the police vehicle and then made a right-hand turn and struck the police officer, causing the officer to roll up onto the hood of this Honda. Then the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed, struck a civilian vehicle, causing the police officer to roll off the hood and onto the street," said Small.

The injured officer was hospitalized in stable condition after suffering several scrapes and bruises, police said. He has since been released.

Action News has learned the unoccupied vehicle was recovered at 10th and West Ruscomb streets.

Small says police are looking for a male and female who were inside the stolen car.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS.
