New evidence recovered after man found dead in suitcase: Sources

Updated 1 hour ago
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police are continuing to investigate the death of a man whose body was discovered inside a suitcase in an alleyway in the Kensington section of Philadelphia.

The discovery was made last Friday on the 600 block of East Hilton Street.

On Wednesday, sources told Action News that detectives went to what they believe is the victim's home on the 5700 block of Leonard Street in Northeast Philadelphia, about three miles from where the suitcase was found. Police vehicles and crime scene personnel surrounded the property as investigators were seen removing several bags of evidence from the home.

Sources also said officers took multiple people in for questioning.

A neighbor said the scene was unsettling.

"When I come home, I see the crime scene, that's not what I want to see," the neighbor said.

Sources told Action News that evidence led detectives back to the residence, where they believe the man was killed before his body was moved.

Neighbors said the victim as friendly.

"I cried. That's sad. I liked him. He was nice. He didn't bother nobody," one neighbor said.

Residents also recalled a strong odor in the days before the body was found.

"It smelled like a dead body. It was funky," one neighbor said. "It was horrible. It took me two to three days to get the smell out of my house."

Another neighbor said, "It smelled horrible. I didn't know if it was dead mice. I didn't know if it was the basement because of the dogs."

Police have not released the victim's name and have not identified a motive.

The medical examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the victim's cause of death -- a process that could take time.
