PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that took place Sunday night in Philadelphia's Hunting Park section.

It happened around 7 p.m. along the 3900 block of North Broad Street.

Police say a 56-year-old man was crossing the street when he was struck by a car. They say he was in the center of the street, not in the crosswalk, when he was hit.

The driver kept going.

The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There is no word yet on his identity.

Police said it's important for drivers to remain on the scene.

"If something happens where a person strikes another individual, that is not necessarily a crime if they remain on location and wait for police, cooperate with police," said Inspector D.F. Pace with the Philadelphia Police Department. "Unfortunately, tragic accidents happen sometimes. However, once you leave the scene of an accident, now you've committed a crime."

Police say the silver front bumper from the fleeing vehicle was recovered at the scene.

The bumper, along with cameras near the scene, reportedly helped investigators locate and tow the vehicle.

A gray Nissan was found under a tarp on Windrim Street.

Now, authorities say they're using surveillance video to try and identify the driver.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the police.
