Phoenixville crews tackle heavy weekend snowfall as residents dig out and play

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. (WPVI) -- Phoenixville road crews spent the weekend battling some heavy snowfall after nearly 7 inches of snow fell across the borough between Saturday and Sunday.

Piles of snow lined the streets on Monday after what some residents described as a two-part storm.

"At first we got a little snow, and it stopped for a little bit, then we got a lot more. So the roads were pretty bad," said Kyle Owens of Phoenixville.

The 6.8 inches recorded over the two days put Phoenixville among the hardest-hit areas in Chester County. For many, that meant shoveling more than once.

"We shoveled Saturday, and ended up having to do it again Sunday with the two stages," said Ted Wojton of Collegeville.

The fast accumulation also kept road crews and private contractors busy. Bates Landscaping brought in additional workers to respond to conditions they hadn't anticipated.

"It ended up being a lot more, so we had more crews on site, more staff that we had to call in," said Melissa Blake of Bates Landscaping.

While some residents focused on cleanup, others took advantage of the winter weather.

Craig Sliniger of Hamilton, N.J., traveled to Valley Forge to enjoy the snow with his grandchildren.

"When I heard they had the snow here, I came in from New Jersey to borrow my grandkids and go sleighriding here," Sliniger said.

His grandson, Prometheus Sliniger of Phoenixville, didn't mind the trek through the snow.

"Once you start hiking up the hill, he kind of heats up your body," he said.

With temperatures dropping, officials warned of potential refreezing on roads. Crews are also watching the forecast for the possibility of more wintry weather.

"We are looking at reporting, longer-range forecasting that could have us busy again next weekend," Blake said.
