Pixar designer on changes for Buzz and Woody in 'Toy Story 5'

How the original Buzz Lightyear designer is updating the character for "Toy Story 5"

Woody and Buzz Lightyear are returning in "Toy Story 5," and that also means the return of many veteran Pixar artists who've worked on the franchise for decades.

Among them is production designer Bob Pauley, who's credited with the original design for Buzz. Pauley had to update the character's design for the new film which introduces a new high-tech model of the space ranger toy - 50 of them in fact!

"Toy Story 5" features a battle between the beloved toys of the past with new technology when Bonnie, the little girl who loves them, is given a new tablet and suddenly playtime is replaced with screen time.

But for Pixar artists like Pauley, embracing new technology has always been part of Pixar culture.

"Every time we start a 'Toy Story' the technology has been racing ahead with those other movies. And so we have to rebuild them or change them or allow them to work with the new programs," Pauley told On The Red Carpet.

The technology tweaks aren't all that's changing in the new sequel. Take Woody's new bald spot for instance.

"We're all getting older and Woody has, you know, he's been off with Bo out on the road and maybe let himself go a little bit," Pauley said.

"Toy Story 5" debuts only in theaters June 19.
