Detectives say two homes were broken into on Thursday, with suspects gaining entry through sliding glass doors in both cases.
Residents expressed concern following the incidents.
"Very shocked because this area is pretty much like a quiet area," said Omega Bullock of Elkins Park.
According to Abington Township police, the first attempted burglary happened inside a gated community in Huntingdon Valley around dinner time. Authorities say the suspects tried to break through a back sliding door while the homeowners were inside.
"The suspects attempted to break through a back sliding door. The homeowners were there at that time. Our belief is that the suspects did not realize that because shortly after they realized someone was home, they fled the area," said Deputy Chief Ed Quinn.
Police say shortly afterward, two to three burglars broke into a home about a mile away in Meadowbrook, again entering through a sliding glass door. This time, no one was home.
"They stole a mixture of jewelry, possibly handbags, and cash," Quinn said.
Authorities say the timing and method of entry are consistent with previous incidents involving burglary groups.
"Given the time of night and mode of entry, we have seen this times in the past with burglary groups, and we think at this time it is a professional group," Quinn said.
Detectives noted this marks the second string of burglaries in the township this year. In January, burglars broke into two homes in Rydal through basement windows. Investigators do not believe those incidents are connected to the recent cases.
Residents say the crimes are unsettling.
"Home is home, so you should feel comfortable leaving anything around, and now knowing that this kind of stuff is going on, you may want to have second thoughts," Bullock said.
Police are urging residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activity. Officials also say patrols are being increased in affected areas, particularly during evening hours.
