ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (WPVI) -- Many questions remain following a shooting in Atlantic City earlier this week that left two police officers injured and a man dead.

The New Jersey Attorney General's Office is leading the investigation into the June 2 incident in the 100 block of North Florida Avenue.

Under state protocol, the attorney general's office handles investigations of officer-involved shootings.

On Wednesday, the office identified the man who died as Donald Gardner, 52, and the officer who fired their weapon as Atlantic City police Officer Robert Reynolds.

Authorities said officers were serving a search warrant around 3 p.m. when gunfire broke out.

Two officers were struck and injured. SWAT Sgt. Christian Ivanov was seriously hurt and remains hospitalized, while a second officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

Sergeant Christian Ivanov of the Atlantic City Police Department was critically injured in a shooting while serving a search warrant.

Officials have not said who fired the shots that struck the officers or whether Gardner was armed at the time.

Gardner's family said he was paralyzed and used a wheelchair following a previous encounter with police in 2013. They say they are still waiting for answers about the circumstances that led to Tuesday's shooting.

Action News requested a copy of the search warrant but was told such documents are not publicly accessible under New Jersey law.

When approached with questions about the shooting, Atlantic City's Public Safety Director said, "We are eager for the (Office of the Attorney General) to release additional details to the public as we pray for our injured officer and his family, but we do not have anything further to say at this time."

A city spokesperson said the mayor is also unable to comment and referred inquiries to the attorney general's office, which has not responded to requests for additional information.
