PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The FIFA World Cup reached a historic milestone Thursday as Philadelphia's match between Curacao and Ivory Coast pushed the tournament to its highest attendance ever.

City officials said more than 273,000 fans have attended the first four matches held in Philadelphia, contributing to the World Cup's record total of 3.6 million spectators.

Beyond the stadium, thousands more gathered at the FIFA Fan Festival in Lemon Hill. Organizers said more than 250,000 visitors have passed through the festival since it opened. Many of them cheered on the U.S. men's national team during its match against Turkey.

"We're proud of our country," said Louis Vessels of Manayunk.

Some supporters arrived in full patriotic costume.

"I cannot tell a lie, I'm George Washington," said John Norwood of Collegeville, adding, "Go USA."

The U.S. team has already secured a place in the knockout round after winning two group-stage matches.

"I hope they can advance even further than the round of 32, but this is the best I've ever seen them play in my life," Vessels said.

Kevin Greene of Deale, Md., added, "It's our year this year. We got a big, big chance."

High demand for the festival's popular charm bracelet souvenir led organizers to require visitors to reserve time slots.

"I love that there is a time thing now," said Michal Masucci of South Philadelphia. "Now I know I'm not going to come in here and wait in line for two hours."

Earlier Thursday, fans of Ivory Coast and Curacao filled the festival grounds before more than 68,000 spectators watched their teams face off at the Philadelphia stadium.

"I like that they set up something like this because it gives a lot of people an opportunity who could not go to the stadium," said Dannlys Logan of Sicklerville.

Ivory Coast won the match 2-0, advancing to the knockout stage for the first time in team history.

"We won. Absolutely," said Mamadou Diarrassouba of West Philadelphia. "You know why, though, right? Because ya know the best team is Ivory Coast."

Thursday night's U.S. match does not affect the team's position in the next round.

The Americans will play their first knockout round game on Wednesday in California, with their opponent still to be determined.
