Red light cameras coming to pair of intersections on Bristol Pike

BRISTOL TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Two new red light cameras are coming to a major highway in Bucks County, and drivers who run the lights could get hit with $100 fines.

The two intersections on Route 13, known as Bristol Pike, were identified through crash data as being eligible for the cameras. They are already installed at Green Lane and Edgely Road, but won't be activated until August 18.

"We are having a problem in Bristol Township around the 13 corridor, with fatal crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists," said Charles Winik, the Chief of Police.

Winik says the cameras will help ensure drivers pay closer attention and make the road safer. He says it will also make the road safer for his officers.

"Police departments have to start working more efficiently with the officers we have, and safer. This is the best way we've found," said Winik.

The cameras are similar to the cameras that are up throughout Philadelphia. Drivers who run a red light will get a $100 fine in the mail. If the incident is questionable, police will review the video and make a determination.

While the cameras will activate on August 18, there is a 60-day grace period. Drivers will only get a warning until October 18.

"I absolutely hate them. I get them in Philadelphia and they're $100," said Shannon Shope, who lives in New Jersey.

According to the Philadelphia Parking Authority, red light cameras generated more than $32 million last year. However, the city has dozens of them. Officials in Bristol Township don't expect anything near that amount.

Some drivers say you can't put a price on safety.

"I have teenagers out on the road," said Brandi Shaw. "If they think they're there, they are going to follow the rules better."
