Running out of rock salt? Here are some 'salternatives' you can use with items you may have at home

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- With store shelves empty amid the high demand for rock salt ahead of this weekend's winter storm, we have some alternative ice melt solutions - or 'salternatives' - you can use with items you may already have at home.

You can mix a half gallon of warm water with dish soap and rubbing alcohol, then splash it on the ice.

Epsom salt is also useful and won't harm your plants or vegetation.

Natural fertilizer, like wood ashes, or coffee grounds, is another alternative that is environmentally safe.

If you're running low on rock salt, you can also boil a large pot of hot water and pour it over the ice on your doorsteps, or a small area, then the sprinkle a little of the rock salt, allowing you to use less.
