Delco native pitches against Savannah Bananas at Citizens Bank Park for sold out games

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Phillies may be out of town this weekend, but the bats won't be taking a break around here.

The Savannah Bananas and Texas Tailgaters are taking over Citizens Bank Park in two sold-out games Saturday and Sunday.

For one player on the team, it's a homecoming.

"It's going to be surreal," said Joe Sperone.

Since he was 6 years old, Sperone, from Broomall, had a love for baseball. His skills earned him a spot on the West Chester University team and Staten Island Ferry Hawks. He quit his office job last year to pursue his passion.

"Ever since I was young, it was always a dream to play in sold-out MLB stadiums, especially Citizens Bank Park," said Sperone.

Now, at 23 years old, that dream will come true this weekend.

Sperone will take the mound at Citizens Bank Park as the pitcher of the Texas Tailgaters.

Banana Ball is a blend of baseball and dancing to put on what they call the "greatest show in sports."

But this is also a proud moment for Sperone's parents, especially his father, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer last year. Instead of sitting in the stands to cheer for the Phillies, now they'll be rooting for their son.

An estimated 45,000 fans will be in attendance, including 10 families from Challenger Baseball of Cherry Hill, which brings the baseball experience to children with special needs.

"Go, Savannah Bananas," yelled 8-year-old Clark.

They were surprised with tickets from Dunkin' and the team on Friday evening.

"It's one of the best parts about this job is giving back to the community, reaching out to fans, connecting with fans," said Sperone, who hopes it's an experience fans will never forget.

Both nights are sold out, but there are a limited number of tickets available on the secondary market.

If you can't make it, you can still watch all the fun on Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN, ESPN+ and Disney+.
