Saving with 6abc: Ways to cut summer gas costs

Updated 1 hour ago
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- With Memorial Day weekend in the rear view mirror, many drivers are turning their attention to summer road trips - and to the high price of gas that comes with them.

Apps such as GasBuddy continue to be a popular tool for finding the lowest fuel prices nearby.

The app also offers a payment card that provides cash back and can save users up to 33 cents per gallon through flash alerts at participating stations.

Other options include the Upside app, which also offers cash-back rewards.

Kimberly Palmer of NerdWallet said apps like these can help drivers earn money back on routine fill-ups.

"Create an account on the app and then you can earn cash back every time you shop at a gas station," she said. "You just have to claim the offer ahead of time and then you go fill up your tank, and that allows you to earn cash back."

Earnify is another app that provides cash back at participating stations.

Many gas brands also offer their own loyalty programs.

"A lot of gas brands actually offer loyalty programs," Palmer said. "You can sign up for those and then you can be constantly earning loyalty points or discounts every time you shop."

Shell, BP, Amoco and Exxon customers in the region can save between 3 and 30 cents per gallon, depending on fuel type and visit frequency.

Additional savings may be available through memberships with other retailers.

"For example, if you're an Amazon Prime member, you can earn a discount at the gas station and you want to make sure you're taking advantage of that," Palmer said. "You can stack those discounts, right?" asked Nydia Han. "You can stack the discounts, which is great for consumers because then you're layering savings on top of each other and you're really lowering your ultimate price," she replied.

Amazon Prime members can save 10 cents per gallon at participating BP and Amoco stations.

Walmart+ members can save 10 cents per gallon at more than 13,000 stations nationwide, including Exxon, Mobil and Walmart locations.

Some grocery chains also offer fuel rewards.

Giant, for example, gives members one point for every dollar spent on eligible purchases, with 10 cents off per gallon for every 100 points earned.

Credit cards may also provide extra points or cash back on gas purchases, and warehouse clubs such as Costco, Sam's Club and BJ's typically offer lower per-gallon prices, though they require paid memberships.

Drivers planning summer travel may find that combining apps, loyalty programs and memberships can help ease the cost of filling up.
