According to the New Jersey Attorney General's Office of Public Integrity and Accountability, an Evesham Township police officer in a marked patrol car attempted to pull over a vehicle around 4:40 a.m. on Route 73 near Lincoln Drive.
The vehicle then collided with a tractor-trailer, and the driver did not survive. Authorities have not released the identity of the driver or the officer involved.
Evesham Township police said an officer was removed from the scene for non-life-threatening medical treatment. That officer's vehicle was not involved in the crash.
Traffic along busy Route 73 was slowed for hours as investigators worked at the scene, and several road closures remained in place until the tractor-trailer was towed away. Roads have since reopened.
A photo taken by a viewer who works in the area showed the severely damaged vehicle left behind after the collision.
Because a police officer was involved in the fatality, the state attorney general's office will lead the investigation.
Authorities have not disclosed the reason for the attempted motor vehicle stop.
