TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- Police are investigating after seven people were wounded in a shooting late Tuesday night in Trenton, New Jersey.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Furman and Center streets, where shell casings littered the roadway.

Officials say the victims include one male teenager and one female teenager, as well as a 22-year-old, 24-year-old, 29-year-old, 30-year-old and a 35-year-old.

All of the victims are being treated at Capital Health Regional Medical Center.

Six victims are in stable condition and one victim remains in critical but stable condition, according to police.

Steve Wilson, director of the Trenton Police Department, said early findings point to more than one gunman.

"Preliminary investigation suggests that there were multiple shooters involved due to separate locations where shell casings were recovered," Wilson said.

Four unoccupied vehicles were also struck by gunfire, police said.

Authorities have not determined a motive in the shooting.

Residents described ongoing concerns about crime in the neighborhood and expressed frustration following the violence.

"What happened last night was clearly an atrocity a tragedy in the community. No one wants to see violence of that nature. We to really address the cause of it. Rather being reactive to the incident itself," said Jhkim Muhammad, of Trenton.

"I been living around here for 10 years. This neighborhood done got really bad," said Keisha, a Trenton resident who did not provide a last name.

"This street can be a little spicy. There's a lot of drug activity and the things that come along with that," said Patrice Lavanture, also of Trenton.

Police acknowledged that the area has experienced persistent issues.

"That area is designated by patrol command as an extra attention area. However, as you know, these crimes are crimes of opportunity. So when police aren't there, that's when this happened," Wilson said.

Officials with the city's community street team said they have previously worked in the area to address concerns and planned to return following the shooting.

"Issues were quality of life. Some of them were about safety. Some of them were about abandoned buildings. Some of them were about trauma," said Perry Shaw of the Trenton Community Street Team.

Trenton enforces a curfew of 10 p.m. during the school year and midnight during the summer. The mayor said the summer curfew may need to be reviewed and potentially moved earlier in response to recent violence.

Police said the investigation remains active.
