It happened around 7:15 p.m. at Heritage Field Airport on the 3300 block of West Ridge Pike in Limerick Township.
According to Limerick Fire Department Chief Ken Shuler, the pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, was being removed from the wreckage when emergency crews arrived.
The pilot was taken to a nearby hospital. Officials have not released information about the extent of the person's injuries.
"He seemed to be talking and everything when he left the scene here," said Shuler.
Chopper 6 video showed the aircraft flipped upside down in a grassy area of the airport.
The airport remained closed Wednesday night as crews worked to remove the plane and contain a fuel leak caused by the crash.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
