PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Smoke particles from Canadian wildfires are causing air quality concerns in the Philadelphia region on Tuesday.

At least 740 wildfires are currently burning in Canada, with at least 201 out of control, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre.

Pennsylvania is among at least eight states, from Wisconsin to Maine, under air quality alerts due to wildfire smoke.

On Monday, Detroit and Chicago were listed among the world's 10 worst major cities for air quality.

The Pennsylvanina Department of Environmental Protection has issued a Code Orange Air Alert for Eastern and Central Pa.

While Philadelphia is still in the "moderate" zone on air quality for smoke, Meteorologist Karen Rogers says it is forecast to become a bit more of an issue later in the day.

There is more smoke in the atmosphere on Tuesday than the region had on Monday, Rogers said.

She said it may be more of an issue to the north, and far east of the city, as it pulls into the region.

Smoke is also expected to be an issue Wednesday and Thursday before it finally moves out, Rogers added.

The smoke is mostly in the upper levels of the atmosphere, so Rogers says it's not as serious as it was a few years ago, when the smoke from Canadian wildfires was more of an issue.

Tuesday's air quality alert is for the sensitive groups, including the young, elderly, and anyone with respiratory issues.

A weather disturbance to the south and west of the region is also bringing in some clouds, which is also causing some haze in the area.

Traffic Reporter Matt Pellman said the smoke and haze in the air are also making it tough to see on the roadways Tuesday morning.
