The online reservation service told Action News that "Table for 1" dining reservations increased 23% during the last 12 months.
According to OpenTable, solo diners also tend to spend more than larger dining groups, with an average check of $94.
The trend comes as more people opt for quieter experiences over larger social gatherings.
While some observers view the increase in solo dining as part of a broader conversation about loneliness in America, therapist Cherlette McCullough said dining alone can offer an opportunity to slow down and focus on personal well-being.
"People have these busy schedules where they're always taking care of other people. So when you do have an opportunity to be alone, to eat alone, it gives you that sense of just being able to breathe," McCullough said.
She emphasized that eating alone should not automatically be associated with loneliness.
"Dining by yourself does not mean that you are lonely. There is a difference," McCullough said. "There's a number of us that enjoy going to have a meal by ourselves for clarity."
At the same time, McCullough said consistently spending time alone while wanting social connection could be cause for concern.
"On the flip side of that, when it's consistent, and when you're desiring connection, and you cannot connect for some reason, some unknown reason, or some known reason, that's when it becomes alarming," she said.
McCullough also said solo dining allows people to savor their meals and disconnect from devices.
OpenTable reported that Saturday is the most popular day for solo dining.
The company also identified New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas as the most popular cities for the trend.
Philadelphia did not make the list, though the growing popularity of solo dining could lead to more parties of one in the city.
