Study: Low-nicotine cigarettes can help you quit smoking

A new study suggests low-nicotine cigarettes could aid smokers in quitting the habit all together.

The New England Journal of Medicine conducted a study during which 800 smokers were given regular cigarettes and ones that contained lower amounts of nicotine.

The results showed participants who smoked the altered cigarettes, smoked 30 to 40 percent fewer per day, and 17 percent were more likely to try to quit.

Long-term studies are currently underway.

In the meantime, the FDA has the power to mandate lower levels of nicotine, but it hasn't made that decision, yet.
