Officers responded to a residence in the 1100 block of North American Street around 12:52 p.m. on Saturday, where they found the newborn girl unresponsive. The baby was pronounced dead shortly after.
Authorities say the infant's mother had just given birth that day.
Detectives say preliminary information suggests the newborn may have sustained puncture wounds, though the official cause of death remains pending an autopsy.
The mother, who is a juvenile and has not been identified, has been charged with voluntary manslaughter, as well as other crimes.
"What is clear now is that this heartbreaking incident constitutes criminal homicide and other criminal charges. More clarity is needed on this teenage girl's mental state both before and shortly after childbirth, when the crimes occurred," said District Attorney Larry Krasner.
The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office is working collaboratively with the Philadelphia Police Department on the case. This investigation is active and ongoing.
