42-year-old Dawn Salvucci says she got tired of being tired. Over the years she had gained weight, was less active and then had to go up in clothing size.
"That's when I said I gotta change this," Dawn said.
So she reached out to weight loss doctor Charlie Seltzer. He also used to be overweight, but now competes in body building competitions.
For his clients he uses the same eating plan he and many other body builders use. It's known as: If It Fits in Your Macros.
Macros meaning carbohydrates, fats and protein. For body builders it's a strict calculation.
But Doctor Seltzer says lay people can get away with just tracking protein and total calories.
He says, "And provided you hit those numbers at the end of the day, things like how often you eat, when you eat or even what you eat aren't important."
For Dawn he made little changes to her diet, like lowering her overall calories to 1,200 and upping her protein intake to 50 grams per day.
"They were small enough where I could do it and stick with it. It wasn't a big change where a couple days down the road I was going to say oh I can't do this," Dawn said.
He also gave her a workout program she could do at home - just 20 to 30 minutes a day.
"The best workout someone can do is the workout they are actually going to do," Dr. Seltzer said.
As with any plan to lose weight, you still have to do the work. But Doctor Seltzer says this is the easiest way to make it fit into your lifestyle.
10 months later and 30 pounds lighter, Dawn says, "I feel great. I really do. People tell me all the time how great I look. My daughter tells me how proud she is of me all the time."
And Dawn says the more little changes she made, the more she started to add healthy things into her diet... and she even started to like working out.
As for tracking her calories and protein she used the My Fitness Pal app.
