PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are investigating after a 7-Eleven store in the city's Mayfair section was damaged when thief smashed a front window, ripped open an ATM and stole cash from inside.

It happened Tuesday morning inside the convenience store on the 3300 block of Tyson Avenue.

According to police, a white Ford pickup truck reversed into a concrete trash can outside of the store around 5:30 a.m.

A male suspect wearing all black then got out of the truck and began hitting the front window with an object, police say.

Authorities arrived on the scene shortly after to find the front window smashed open and the ATM inside ripped open and emptied of all cash.

It's still unclear how much money the thief got away with.

A few blocks away, police located the white truck, which was left unoccupied on the 3300 block of Disston Street with the engine running. Officers contacted the truck's owner, who confirmed it had been stolen overnight.

A 7-Eleven customer said his friend locked himself in the back for safety during the theft.

"He's traumatized. He's back there, his hands are shaking. He said he ran in the back room, locked the door, called 911," said Patrick Glynn. "I'm getting nervous to come out at nighttime in this neighborhood anymore. That's how bad it's gotten, to be honest with you."

Action News has learned someone tried to rob the store at gunpoint last week, but a customer scared off that suspect.

Customers say the store hours changed to close earlier and open later, but the business was still hit yet again- this time with the theft from the ATM.

So far, no arrests have been made.

The incident remains under investigation.
