PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The government shutdown is causing more flight delays and cancellations, but there is an app that can help you avoid being blindsided by a change in plans.

We have that and some travel hacks to save you money on flights and car rentals in this edition of 6abc.

First, a lot of different websites help you compare flights to get the lowest price. The question we are always asked is: Which one works best?

"Google Flights has kind of taken over as the 800-pound gorilla in this space," said travel expert Jonathan Weinberg. "And one of the reasons is they just do such a good job of finding the best deals."

Weinberg, with AutoSlash, said another big question for some travelers is: Should I redeem points or pay money for my flight?

There's a free browser extension to help you figure that out called Points Path.

And if you're planning to rent a car on your trip, use Autoslash. It scans the internet to find the cheapest rate and automatically applies eligible discount codes and coupons.

If something less expensive pops up before your trip, Autoslash will alert you.

And Weinberg said when renting a car, it pays to invest in a AAA membership, which will get you discounts at Hertz, Dollar, and Thrifty as well as a free child car seat for your trip.

"And AAA is the only car rental discount that allows you to avoid the underage fee. So, if you're under 25 years old, if you are ages 20 to 24, you're going to be charged a hefty underage fee, renting with pretty much any company. But if you're a member of AAA, you can bypass that fee completely," said Weinberg.

Costco also offers great discounts on car rentals with Enterprise, Avis, Budget, and Alamo.

And an app called Flighty promises travelers that they'll "never be blindsided by a delay again."

First, put in your flight info and the app tracks your aircraft 25 hours before your flight, and that way it can predict a delay and a new departure time before the airline even notifies you.

So, if there is going to be a delay, you're the first to know and you can get a jump-start on re-booking.

The apps and browser extensions are either totally free or have a free version.

Flighty's free version is limited, however, and its subscription pricing starts at $5 a week, so you can pay as you go, per trip
