Two people were killed and eight others were injured. The victims killed have been identified as Anthony Howlett, 42, and Tyasiah West, 33.
Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora said Howlett had recently been recognized at an event for rebuilding his life after incarceration.
Now, some residents say they have questions about the police response before suspects fired shots into the crowd.
Some of those Trenton residents spoke with Action News and said they want to know more about what happened while police were responding to an unauthorized block party at Locust and Chambers streets Sunday.
"I do believe that there was actually a unit present when the shooting happened," said Trenton Police Director Steve Wilson.
Trenton leaders say they're dealing with gun violence and problems that stem from block parties that are popping up without permits.
"You going to tell me that they couldn't shut this down?" asked Grace Fernandez, from Trenton.
The crowd grew to more than 100 people before police say multiple gunmen walked up and fired shots into the crowd at around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
"Unfortunately, the crowd was larger than the police presence and even sometimes with the presence of police, these things happen," Wilson said.
Officials said the victims range in age from 23 to 43.
"My heart breaks for them because it's so much blood," Fernandez said.
Fernandez said she believes the chance of any violence could've been reduced before the crowd got out of hand.
"They knew that they didn't have a permit, so why blame the people? You have to take responsibility for this," she said.
Mayor Gusciora was on the block after the shooting, speaking with residents.
He says the city has been working to put a stop to block parties that are popping up without permits and in turn, preventing the gun violence that sometimes comes with it.
"I call out to the parents to make sure that their children are not involved in these incidents, because they do get out of hand. And it is unfortunate for this neighborhood -- it's right under revitalization," Gusciora said.
Trenton's police director and mayor referred questions about the timeline and handling of the shooting response to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office. They're now leading this double homicide investigation.
