UPPER DARBY, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- An Upper Darby motorcycle officer was hurt after being struck by a vehicle in the township's Drexel Hill section. Now, authorities are investigating whether the man behind the wheel was under the influence.

"He's an 11-year veteran. He's a fighter thankfully he will be OK," said Superintendant Timothy Bernhardt, with the Upper Darby Police Department.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday at the intersection of Owens Avenue and Garrett Road.

The officer, who is part of the highway patrol division, was hit when the driver of a red pickup truck failed to stop at a stop sign, according to police.

"We believe that the male that hit him was operating the vehicle under controlled substance. Our Accident Investigation team is working that case and we do anticipate charging that male later on today, with at minimum DUI," Bernhardt said.

The crash threw the officer from his motorcycle, leaving him with two broken bones in his leg.

The 46-year-old driver of this striking vehicle is now in custody. However, video allegedly shows him trying to flee the scene.

"He walked up to the officer, saw it was an officer and then ran back to his truck, so we believe he was trying to leave," Bernhardt said.

Police are awaiting the results of a blood test from the driver before filing charges.

The officer is expected to make a full recovery.
