MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (WPVI) -- A man missing after being swept into the ocean by a wave on the Big Sur coastline has been identified as a 35-year-old U.S. Army specialist from New Jersey.

On Monday, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office identified the missing man as U.S. Army Spc. Amanpreet Thind.

The tragedy occurred on Soberanes Point in the Garrapata State Park in Monterey County, the sheriff's office said.

Garrapata State Park is the same park where earlier this month, a father tried to rescue his 7-year-old daughter who was dragged into the ocean by a 15-to-20-foot wave. The Canadian father, Yuji Hu, and his daughter, Anzi Hu, both died.

Thind was swept off the rocks, along with two women Saturday afternoon. The women were able to reach the shore, but Thind hasn't been found.

Thind is a student at the military's Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, according to Col. Christy L. Whitfield, commandant of the center.

"As search and recovery operations continue, we hold out hope that Spc. Thind will be found," Whitfield said in a statement. "We offer our deepest condolences to the Thind family during this difficult time. We are providing those impacted with every resource and support service available and extend our heartfelt gratitude to local, state, and national first responders working tirelessly to locate Spc. Thind."

Over the weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard spotted what may have been a body in the ocean, but rescuers lost sight due to high surf.

On Sunday, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office said the search-and-rescue mission for the missing man is now a search-and-recovery operation.
