U.S. Transportation Secretary tours I-495 bridge

WILMINGTON, Del. (WPVI) -- U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx traveled to Wilmington on Friday to get a firsthand look at the tilting I-495 bridge.

Foxx called the situation a calamity that not only affects the residents of the first state but also people up and down the east coast.

He said it was important to get the highway repaired quickly.

Foxx added that the federal government is all in to fix it. The estimated $20 million price tag to temporarily fix the bridge is coming from federal coffers.

"The work that is happening here is the product of the aggressive work on behalf of these teams and I want to thank you for the great work you're doing here," said Foxx.

"This bridge was closed last Monday. Literally our engineers, design team and contractors have been working around the clock. We have come up with a temporary solution that we believe will be incorporated into a final solution," said Shailen Bhatt, Delaware Secretary of Transportation.

The I-495 shutdown has led to roughly 90,000 vehicles being detoured daily.

DelDOT officials say 30 minutes are being added to commutes.

"A good portion of that traffic, about 35,000 cars a day, have moved to I-95," said Gene Donaldson, DelDOT.

Drivers say Route 13, Naamans Road and other secondary roads have been a gridlock during rush hour.

"It's a mess out - people driving crazy. It's a problem, it's a problem," said Sean Mason.

"I have a shore place in Bethany and the only way we can manage it is to leave at 3:00 a.m. to go down and come back at the same time," said Rutt Yancy.

Transportation officials say it's a smart move.

They're asking drivers to carpool, use mass transit or simply travel during off peak hours but they are sacrifices that most drivers cannot or are unwilling to do.

And with the first phase of repairs not expected to be completed until Labor Day at best, taking the road less traveled in Delaware will be a long one.

"Four months now it's to six months. God only knows when it's going to open up but I hope it's soon," said Mason.

DelDOT officials say you can download their phone app or tune into the department's radio station at 1380 AM to get real time-traffic conditions.
