Volunteers pack book bags full of school supplies for families dealing with cancer

ELKINS PARK, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- In a few short weeks, children all across the nation will pack their bags for school.

But not all of them have gotten a chance to shop for supplies.

Some have been fighting alongside a family member through a cancer diagnosis.

That's why volunteers have been hard at work with the "Breathing Room Foundation."

They're giving away hundreds of backpacks, and with that, families receive a breath of fresh air.

"We're sure to listen to the family's needs...we're able to be flexible in the support that we give, whether it's financial support to pay a bill, whether it's home cooked meals, yard work...transportation to treatment, whatever it might be that solves their needs that they can have a little time to breathe," said Mary Ellen Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the Breathing Room Foundation.
