Vulgar email sent to members of Penn community after apparent hack

Friday, October 31, 2025
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Students, alumni, and faculty at the University of Pennsylvania received an inflammatory email apparently from a hacker on Friday morning.

Some members of the Penn community received the vulgar message multiple times.

The university posted a statement to its website indicating that it is aware of the fraudulent email and is taking action.

Recipients were instructed to disregard or delete the message.

Full statement from Penn:

A fraudulent email has been circulated that appears to come from the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education. This is obviously a fake, and nothing in the highly offensive, hurtful message reflects the mission or actions of Penn or of Penn GSE. The University's Office of Information Security is aware of the situation, and our Incident Response team is actively addressing it.
