Whale causes catastrophic damage to New Jersey fire department marine unit

CARTERET, N.J. (WPVI) -- A whale crashed into a New Jersey fire department's rescue ship, causing it to sink after catastrophic damage.

The Carteret Fire Department's Marine Unit 2 was hit on July 4, near Raritan Bay, as it was returning from holiday patrolling.

Officials say the boat immediately took on water and everyone on board had to abandon it within seconds.

A jet ski operator and another boater fished them out of the water along with members of the Perth Amboy Marine Unit.

Thankfully, everyone made it out safely, thanks in part, to wearing the appropriate life jackets.
