What to know about FloatLab, the new art installation on Schuylkill River in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- There is a new art installation on the Schuylkill River in South Philadelphia.

The first-of-its-kind public structure was floated into place at Bartram's Garden on Wednesday.

Mural Arts Philadelphia and Bartram's Garden teamed up to construct what they're calling a FloatLab.

"FloatLab is a semi-submersible structure that floats using principles of equilibrium, displacement, and buoyancy within the Tidal Schuylkill River," according to Mural Arts Philadelphia.

The massive interactive art installation -- designed by the architectural firm Howeler and Yoon in Boston -- was transported and tugged up to Philadelphia from North Carolina.

As the firm describes it, the intentional design will allow visitors to take in both the residential and industrial landscape of Southwest Philadelphia.

"FloatLab will allow us to get close to the river and allow us to really examine the river's chemistry. So that's the 'lab' part of it," said Maitryi Roy, with Bartram's Garden.

The 75-foot-wide floating structure will be a permanent river access point, offering visitors an incredible bird's-eye view of the river's ecological wonderland from the unique circular platform.

"FloatLab is essentially this experience that allows people to really see this stretch of the Tidal Schuylkill with new perspective," Roy said.

The bright yellow circular design will allow for fishing, water sample collection and recreation when a footbridge is connected in September.

This comes as officials say the water in the Schuylkill River is cleaner than ever, where you can catch up to 50 different species of fish.
